By now, we all know that Teairra Mari lost her lawsuit claiming revenge porn against 50 Cent. A Los Angeles court ordered Teairra to pay 50 Cent more than $30,000 in legal fees. Can it get any worse for her? YES, IT CAN and IT DID. During 50 Cent’s pursuit to recover the money owed to him he uncovered Teairra’s salary for Love & Hip-Hop Hollywood. It was revealed that Teairra makes a mere $5,000 per episode, while her counterparts are paid upward of $25,000 per episode. For instance, Teairra Mari’s ex Ray J is reportedly paid $25,500 per episode. Yes, I know he is a bigger name than Teairra, but REALLY? This is yet another example of performers not being paid their worth. We all remember the stories of groups like Salt-N-Peppa being paid pennies while record companies raked in millions.
So how do we avoid this in any job? I’m glad you asked. First, do your research. Find out what others are being paid in your industry. (For instance, I wonder did Teairra know that Joseline Hernandez was paid about $400,000 per season for L&HH Atlanta, this equates to about $22,000 per episode). Second, narrow your research down to match the job you will be performing. Third, if you find yourself being required to take less, always leave room to negotiate an increase based on performance and/or outcomes.
How can we ever win the money game if we don’t know the rules? How can you ever “pay yourself first” or “save for a rainy day” when you simply don’t earn enough money for your lifestyle? Almost every career comes with a lifestyle (cars, clothes, jewelry, travel, etc). If you are not paid enough money to maintain your lifestyle how will you ever grow financially? When you are not paid you’re worth, it becomes more difficult to save money and maintain good credit. How can someone like Teairra save 15% to 20% of her income, which is what financial experts recommend, when her life style has to compete with the likes of Ray J and Cardi B? Saving money is key to financial success. Remember it’s not only how much money you make, what matters most is how much money you keep.
